It is often referred to as
"the living fossil" as it can be traced back 200 million years
to fossils of the Permian Period. The Ginkgo Biloba tree is a deciduous
tree which can live to be 1,000 years old. Reaching heights of 100 to
120 feet, it can be 3 to 4 feet in diameter. The leaf of the Ginkgo has
a distinctive fan-shape, divided up the middle with parallel veins. The
female Ginkgo also bears a non-edible, foul-smelling fruit with an inner
seed that resembles an almond. This seed is edible and is sold in the
orient; however, it is the leaves of the Ginkgo Biloba tree that are
used in the extract sold here in the United States as well as in Europe.
