St. John's Wort flourishes
primarily in Northern California and Southern Oregon.
Folklore says
that early Christians named the plant after St. John the Baptist
because it releases this blood red oil around the June anniversary of
his beheading.
The term Wort is an old English word for plant. The botanical name for
St. John's Wort is Hypericum Perforatum and so is sometimes referred
to as Hypericum. also known as Hypericum. It was first used not only
to soothe anxiety, but topically, to treat battle wounds in the
crusades. Throughout history, St. John's Wort has been used in folk
medicine as a remedy for anxiety, sleep disturbances, and moodiness,
as well as for soothing the digestive system.
More recently, St. John's Wort is being recognized by Western medicine
as a method for enhancing mood and promoting a healthy sense of
well-being.*
It is composed of a wide range of compounds with
hypericin being the key component. Extracts should be standardized to
contain 0.3% hypericin to ensure that each capsule contains the
appropriate amount of active compounds.
